What do you need to know about the remake of 1961’s WEST SIDE STORY? While the original film was directed by Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise, this new WEST SIDE STORY has the power of the great Steven Spielberg and the late Stephen Sondheim, and the New York Premiere speaks for the love engendered by the new and older versions. Jerome Robbins had the Broadway version in 1957, but this new now nods to stage and screen.

Original cast member Rita Moreno even dressed up for this sparkling red carpet. “What am I even doing here,” she quipped, meaning dressed to the nines turning 90 years old on Dec. 11, for this event movie.

WEST SIDE STORY from 20th Century Studios opens Dec. 10, so Rita and film celebrate almost the same day.

Before you can sing “Tonight, Tonight,” take a look at the 2021 Steven Spielberg adaptation… “tonight is about family…”

Revel in these clips before you can see it in theaters, the big screen is mandatory. The film stars Rachel Zegler (Maria), Ansel Elgort (Tony), Ariana DeBose (Anita), David Alvarez (Bernardo), Mike Faist (Riff), Josh Andrés Rivera (Chino), Corey Stoll (Lieutenant Schrank) and Brian d’Arcy James (Sergeant Krupke).

The marvelous Rita Moreno, Academy Award winner for her portrayal of Anita in the 1961 film, is Valentina, a reimagined revised iteration of the character of Doc, who owns the little corner store where Ansel Elgort’s Tony works. WEST SIDE STORY is produced and directed by Steven Spielberg, with a script by Academy Award-nominated screenwriter and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner.

The new film has been reworked for the screen from the original 1957 Jerome Robbins’ Broadway musical, written by Arthur Laurents with music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and concept, direction and choreography by Jerome Robbins.

In other words, all good for the doubters who will find nothing to see here except an extravaganza worthy of Spielberg, Sondheim, and the new stars who inhabit this WEST SIDE STORY, which opens Dec. 10.

Visit here, and see all the glory.
