LOS ANGELES, CA (UPDATED): With James Mangold’s Ford v Ferrari tying the nominations count with Warner Bros JOKER, and a tie between Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story and Sam Mendes’ 1917, The International Press Academy (IPA) jump-started Awards Season by lining up the finest films of 2019 for the official 24th Satellite Awards Nominations announcement.
Ford v Ferrari (20th Century Fox) starring Matt Damon and Christian Bale, clocked in with 10 total nominations as did Warner Bros JOKER, while Marriage Story (Netflix) toplined by Adam Driver and Scarlet Johansson, came over the line with eight nominations. The George MacKay starrer 1917 from Universal Pictures ties Marriage Story, also at eight nominations. IPA’s member-voted choices total 23 categories for film; 13 for TV, for 36 possible categories.
The IPA named Edward Norton (Motherless Brooklyn) as this year’s recipient of the Auteur Award. Director Rian Johnson’s Knives Out nabbed Best Ensemble: Motion Picture, and Succession made the grade for Best Ensemble: Television.
Additionally, IPA President Mirjana Van Blaricom noted that “for the first time, Alita Battle Angel,” which is nominated in several categories, “bridged the uncanny valley for viewers with total involvement. This cinematic shift in VFX was made possible by real human wizards.” Van Blaricom added: “It reminded me of Dorothy in 1939, when she opens the door to color. In other words, eighty years later movies like Alita and The Lion King have opened a new ‘door’ to a virtual world for us.”
The International Press Academy selects nominees from domestic and international submissions for 36 categories, 23 Motion Picture and 13 Television. Nominations are derived from advance screenings, film festivals worldwide (i.e.; BAFTA, Cannes, Sundance, Telluride, TIFF), as well as consideration screeners for individual journalists, and/or sanctioned links as available by the deadline*. The Mary Pickford Award and the Tesla Award recipients will be announced at a later date with the winners list for 2019.

(Editor’s note: Yes, the JOKER is wild… lots of nominations for the eagle-eyed! Last minute votes make it a Caddyshack, come from behind moment at Augusta. Haha, in keeping with the Joker theme, see noms on the live link below.)

Official 24th Satellite Award Nominations are here.
[*IPA reserves the right to add Mrs. Maisel from Amazon, which will screen on 12/06/2019.]
