Most of us in Hollywood remember when Sharon Stone plucked an Australian bad boy out of obscurity from a ballsy indie movie called ROMPER STOMPER, where clench-fisted lead Hando has a goggle-eyed stare that scared the crap out of first-look audiences. Hando was 28-year-old Russell Crowe who even showed up at a Romper Stomper premiere party in LA wearing that same menacing neo-Nazi-ish black trench look, complete with fake tats from Romper. I was there, and not a fan right away because of said far-right disguise; however, flash forward past his handlers wanting to send him to ambassador school to mellow him out? A male lead was born.
Oz TV actor Crowe’s star rose from Sharon’s 1995 film The Quick and The Dead to deep critical acclaim in Curtis Hanson’s 1997 film noir from the James Ellroy novel, LA Confidential. Director Curtis Hanson and co-writer Brian Helgeland won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay the next year, but it was Russell Crowe as Bud White who thrilled elite Fleur-de-lis sex goddess Kim Basinger with his “you like to protect women, don’t you Bud” charm. My neighbor’s husband played Crowe’s partner Dick “Stens” Stensland (Graham Beckel); the whole picture was a love-letter to classic noir Los Angeles of 1953, a burning corrupt decade after the Zoot Suit Riots in ’43 for LAPD. Kim Basinger won her long-awaited Oscar for Best Actress perhaps because of Crowe’s incredible tenderness in that film, a foreshadow of his considerable talent.
Some say Russell Crowe (born in 1964) parallels Orson Welles aging out? But Crowe has transitioned back to being a musician, which will likely save him from Citizen Kane’s Boy Genius fate of an overindulgence-related heart attack. That band to save his life is The Gentlemen Barbers.
Of his slide back into frontman role, Crowe said “I imagine when everyone has a comfy seat, I’ll tell more stories. After all, that’s what it’s about, songs or films. It’s always about the story. In the pubs and clubs, we will be putting the foot down. The Gentlemen Barbers sway between R&B, Gospel, dirty country songs about murder, dark waltzes, and powerful inspiring singalongs. Should be a good night.”
“We do a lot of story songs, but we also know we are here to blow out the cobwebs and give the audience a good night,” and the actor turned guitarist also said they plan to “take the show on the road.”
Here’s a look at our Gladiator at work as a Gentleman Barber
As Russell Crowe’s band promo lists him, “some 40-plus international awards later, including BAFTA, SAG, Academy Award, Golden Globes, Crowe still keeps his love for the immediacy of live performance.”
We’re here for his music, yet audiences also long to see the New Zealand All Blacks rugby fan headlining again. So here’s our Top 10 Films in Honor of The Gentleman Barber’s other day job in Hollywood.
Top 10 Russell Crowe Films Ranked
1. L.A. Confidential (1997)
Breakout Role: Bud White
Crowe’s Bud White played the muscle in this Masterpiece of LA neo-noir. The twisted love triangle with Guy Pearce and Kim Basinger results in a black eye for both of them, and a trip to Bizbee, Arizona.
2. The Insider (1999)
Role of a Lifetime: Jeffrey Wigand
This whistleblower saga sees Crowe disappear into a white-haired tobacco industry turncoat, who spills the tea on the Pharma-soaked leaves in your 20 pack. Aged up and fatted up, this performance in Oscar-nominated.
3. Gladiator (2000)
Iconic Status Role: Maximus Decimus Meridius
“Are you not entertained?” Need we say more about Crowe’s Oscar star turn here, as Max goes mad and into slavery. He is betrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, despite Richard Harris making him regent. Ridley Scott’s epic shines through today, tomorrow, as Maximus Lives. (Let’s not entertain any bad sequels, shall we?)
4. Romper Stomper (1992)
Gnarly Role: Hando
Literally playing a neo-Nazi skinhead of the Australian persuasion, Crowe has a change of heart after they break into an upscale girl’s family home, as she steals his heart. Balls to the wall, the role pump-ed up his rep in Town.
5. A Beautiful Mind (2001)
Delicate Role: John Nash
Nominated for Best Actor, Crowe’s titular game theory troubled genius biopic movie won Best Picture, for delicately detailing the schizophrenic life of one of the most innovative mathematical thinkers who ever lived.
6. Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003)
Bro Role: Capt. Jack Aubrey
This is no bounding main frippery, but a naval epic with lovely touches of “albermarle pudding” and “best of two weevils” period jokes, ship’s models, brain surgery at sea, with a masterful performance by Paul Bettany as ship’s doctor.
7. 3:10 to Yuma (2007)
Cruel Compassionate Role: Ben Wade
Crowe’s gentleman/scholar Wade is a self-taught outlaw gang leader, with vicious Ben Foster as his rabid dog as they hunt down Christian Bale. Bale being the honorable and haunted law abiding citizen. (Side note: Foster’s Charlie Prince costume Custer-style jacket routinely sells out still to fans online.)
8. Proof of Life (2000)
Tender Role: Terry Thorne
Contrary to tabloid opinion at the time, Crowe did not break-up co-star Meg Ryan’s marriage in this hostage husband-in-jeopardy drama. Instead, their onscreen chemistry as Kidnap expert Crowe tries to rescue the man Meg loves is made all the more real by their off-screen entanglement.
9. The Nice Guys (2016)
Buddy Cop Role: Jackson Healy
Drive’s bad boy Ryan Gosling goes comedic here paired with aging bad-boy Crowe, and together they prove everyone at an LA party falls off a balcony in the Hollywood Hills at some point. Just kidding, this two-man show is tender, odd, and engaging.
10. State of Play (2009)
Underrated Role: Cal McAffrey
It’s not a guaranteed hit when you star in a political, bureaucratic conspiracy thriller, but when it co-stars Helen Mirren, Rachel McAdams, and Ben Affleck? Russell Crowe’s rough-edged investigative journalist uncovers a doozy as far as corruption.
Bonus ICYMI: The Water Diviner (2014)
Director-Actor Role: Connor
Take the time to see Crowe direct himself in the post-Gallipoli era, as a father in search of his sons’ graves. It will take the man who was a gladiator down a very different path in wartime. Deeply resonant, deeply human, as shop-worn phrase-loving movie critics like to say.
