Suze Orman Blew the Roof Off & Other Highlights from MOGUL X
On Sept. 21, 2019, MOGUL X happened at The KnockDown Center in Maspeth, New York. The venue is a breezy, large, industrial spot, where MOGUL admission tickets retailed at $1200, but sold at a mercifully heavy discount to many attendees.
Key speaker Suze Orman blew the roof off. You can’t say that Ms. Orman warms to her subject. She walks onto the stage with her head on fire to hammer home her standards. (“Money is the greatest teacher you will ever have in your life!”) She brought her brand of can-do to the lively, Brooklyn-y crowd.
Outside of the conference hall, Ms. Orman was blistering when asked how she reconciles making money, and being wealthy with the current administration with its broad agenda of, (let’s say), making everything worse?
While charmingly scorching the earth with her take on the sitting President, and anyone who voted for him, she insisted “I still feel fine about making money, I feel fine about paying taxes; I have never had a problem about paying taxes! I would actually love to pay more taxes if I thought that by paying more taxes others would benefit.” Adding: ” As far as our government goes – are you kidding me?”
Pham Takes on Entrepreneurship for Women (And Everyone Else)
Ms. Pham gave a master class, ‘Starting Your Own Business,’ and was organized, generous, comprehensive and rapid fire.
A few advertorials snuck in to the event, but were given with sincerity and bonhomie. For the business minded and job seekers, the event paid off with on- the-spot “Counselors” in a variety of fields, whose dance cards filled up fast, and there were a half dozen companies there to solicit potential hires, including IBM, CBS and Prologis.
Another standout Presenter was John Henry, host of Viceland’s “Hustle.” Mr. Henry had to be pulled away by the ebullient, multitasking Press Officer Brennan Johnson, for his own interviews because he was so intent on giving every Mogul with a question deep advice. Starting your own business? Go Niche! “There’s riches in ditches!” Adorable.
Although there were multiple fun-sounding seminars – “Finding your Zen”, “Finding Your Purpose” and “Travel Like a Local” – this stringer stuck to the basics.
Finding Your Purpose was scheduled early, and while desperate to find my purpose, I had my hands full finding Maspeth. I also thought it prudent to sit in on the relatively grim sounding, but extremely informative, “The Truth About Credit” with Will Roundtree, rather than heading off to find my Zen, which is possibly not to be found in the outer boroughs.
Quibbles could be heard, ‘no Vegan options amongst the food trucks’ (true!); ‘Schedule of Seminars did not give Presenters names on the chart,’ and ‘the shuttle to subway was MIA by end of day.’ Truth be told Maspeth is not exactly Midtown, but hey, it’s emerging – like Mogul. All in all, the participants were happy, moved, and delighted by the relative lack of up-selling.
Mogul may have come a long way in a very short time, but has perhaps barely begun to harness the power envisioned by its prescient and lovely founder.
Go Mogul! Visit their website here. Go Tiffany Pham!
