BURBANK, CA: With everyone on lockdown due to the spread of the coronavirus, Moviebill and Regal are bringing some of the fun of going to the movie theatre right into your living room, through the magic of Augmented Reality (AR). State-of-the-art technology allows anyone with a mobile device to access Moviebill interactive 3D experiences through the Regal App, beginning with the carnival style ‘Pop-a-Corn’ game released April 7.
“Movies have always offered an escape from reality,” said James Andrew Felts, Moviebill Founder and CEO. “At times like this, we need them now more than ever. That’s why we decided if moviegoers can’t go to the theatre, we can at least bring a theatrical experience to them.”
Planned AR experiences launching in April will give moviegoers the opportunity to play cinema related games together, interact with detailed movie timelines, and celebrate the joy of moviegoing even while practicing safe social distancing.
The first of several upcoming games, ‘Pop-a-Corn’ is playable in one or two player modes, allowing users to place 3D popcorn buckets in AR space. Then, players can try their hands at tossing popcorn kernels and trying to land them inside the buckets. As gameplay continues, the rounds get trickier, moving the buckets and even shrinking them smaller and smaller with each successful toss.
“We are excited to partner with our friends at Moviebill to bring this interactive experience to our fans,” added Ken Thewes, Regal CMO. “While nothing can compare to the thrill of the big screen experience at Regal, we sincerely hope that games like these can help movie lovers pass the time away until our theatres reopen.”
Following the launch of ‘Pop-a-Corn’ on April 7, Moviebill will roll out additional AR attractions on a weekly basis. A series of interactive 3D labyrinths, ‘Movie Mazes’ will follow on April 14, followed by ‘Regal Crown Toss’ on April 21. Additional experiences are in the works throughout the summer and will be officially announced at a later date.
Movie fans in the United States will be able to access the AR activations by downloading the Regal App and tapping on the Moviebill icon in the top right corner.
“Millions of frequent moviegoers are anxiously awaiting the opportunity to leave home and get back to the movies,” added Felts. “Not only for the content, but also for the community, the experience, and the joy of the shared big screen experience.”
This year, Regal has launched several AR experiences via its partnership with Moviebill. Highlights have included poster takeover experiences for ‘Frozen II’ and ‘Onward,’ a 3D ‘Terminator: Dark Fate’ experience that allowed users to come face to face with a full scale Rev-9 Terminator, and a ‘Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey’ poster game that let users use Harley’s signature mallet to smash different movie posters to reveal prizes and exclusive content.
The new games and all past activations are available now in the Regal App.
