Crazy Little Thing Called DOWNSIZING from Payne with Damon, Wiig, Waltz & Hong Chau

by Quendrith Johnson, Los Angeles Correspondent

For everybody who loved the DESCENDANTS with George Clooney, but thought it was too sad, or loved SIDEWAYS with Paul Giamatt but not that comedic mean streak of Alexander Payne, here comes something to really love.

It’s called DOWNSIZING from Paramount, directed by Payne and co-written with Jim Taylor. This new comedy stars Matt Damon, Christoph Waltz, Kristen Wiig and Hong Chau from INHERENT VICE.

If it sounds like “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids,” it’s not. Actually everything gets fractionalized here. The tagline is “a big world is waiting.”

Unlike Jonathan Swift’s “Modest Proposal” this is a more practical approach to world over-population. Imagine everything at 5 inches to say 72 inch scale, or way smaller than you are right now.

But don’t get lost in the math or dubious physics of this movie, because the miniaturized world looks spectacular. And it’s a fantastic alternative to Agenda 21, the alleged United Nations plan for depopulating the earth. (What? Google it up. Scary.)

But First a Tiny Peak at DOWNSIZING

Meanwhile, it’s a small world after all in Alexander Payne’s brilliant rendition of what happens when big ideas turn regular-sized people into scale-model minds on a grand tableau.

CWaltz17

DOWNSIZING just unspooled this week at Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), plus these photos prove the great cast chemistry.

Paramount’s Official Small Print on This Movie

Downsizing imagines what might happen if, as a solution to over-population, Norwegian scientists discover how to shrink humans to five inches tall and propose a 200-year global transition from big to small. People soon realize how much further money goes in a miniaturized world, and with the promise of a better life, everyman Paul Safranek (Matt Damon) and wife Audrey (Kristen Wiig) decide to abandon their stressed lives in Omaha in order to get small and move to a new downsizedcommunity — a choice that triggers life-changing adventures.

A big world may be waiting, but everyone was their Actual Size at TIFF.

DADDY’S HOME 2: Mel’s Like Team Spirit, That’s Gibson, Wahlberg, Ferrell & Lithgow

by Quendrith Johnson, Los Angeles Correspondent

Mel Gibson comes back from traffic court, lol, okay too soon. Mulligan. Mel Gibson comes back from his Hollywood resurrection this year with his six-pack Oscar-nominated movie HACKSAW RIDGE (2016), that won two Oscars for sound mixing and editing, to join son of anarchy Mark Wahlberg and deviant nice guy Will Ferrell in DADDY’S HOME 2, their hit franchise reteam.

MelLithWalFer17

But he’s not alone in the father-figure star power value-add. Beloved veteran actor John Lithgow joins the onscreen DNA party too. And there’s sidekick John Cena, who recently made a heartfelt video that truly inspires people to ‘never give up,’ and even makes you forget who the sponsor is, seriously.  So, expect the best here as this foursome looks promising plot-wise.

MGLithDH217

This movie drops Nov. 10 from Paramount, but it’s never too soon to get a good laugh at the Old Man’s expense, even if it’s just an onscreen version of Pops. Because? “This November, it’s every daddy for himself,” as the studio teases the trailer.

Here’s a Look Into DADDY’S HOME 2

Paramount Puts It This Way…

In the sequel to the 2015 global smash, father and stepfather, Dusty (Mark Wahlberg) and Brad (Will Ferrell) have joined forces to provide their kids with the perfect Christmas. Their newfound partnership is put to the test when Dusty’s old-school, macho Dad (Mel Gibson) and Brad’s ultra-affectionate and emotional Dad (John Lithgow) arrive just in time to throw the holiday into complete chaos.

Scarlett Johansson’s Super Bowled Over In Her GHOST IN THE SHELL Spot

by Quendrith Johnson, Los Angeles Correspondent

Mostly what we love about the Super Bowl on TV is the ads, right? Well Scarlett Johansson is giving you one better this Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 5, with a custom TV trailer for her graphic-novel movie-adapt, GHOST IN THE SHELL.

The tagline is: “Everything they told her was a lie,” and no small irony she just left her marriage to French actor Roman Dauriac. Maybe it was over their Yummy Pop joint venture of popcorn stores in France, or in further news, the split comes just after working with GHOST director Rupert Sanders, who became notorious for his entanglement with Kristen Stewart on the set of Snow White & The Huntsman. Let’s just say he’s on our Watch List now, ladies.

Luckily ScarJo is a fighter, as she can survive anything in this sci-fi from the future, GHOST IN A SHELL. Here’s an advance look before this spot airs Super Bowl Sunday…

Watch RINGS Movie Prank Big-box Buyers: Seriously, Halloween in February

SCREENMANCER PRANK ALERT: Has there ever been a better movie slogan? “You know the rules: first you watch it, then you die.” RINGS17

Gee whiz kids, welcome to Halloween in February, as RINGS Team place hidden cameras to catch the freak show when real-life TV store customers see that creepy doll-like waif come at them for real. As in live body through the plasma screen, IRL. (Which means In Real Life, for those over 25.) Yes, it’s a little sadistic to prank these nice unsuspecting customers, who literally flip out when Samara crawls after them.

Oh, and by the way, Paramount Pictures franchise installment RINGS comes out Feb. 3, so you can scare the hell-o out of your friends, family, and Valentine’s Day dates. Great timing, huh? Plus Vince D’Onofrio is in it, which is extra crispy. ringsonlineteaser1-shtRINGS is directed by F. Shusaku Endo’s Novel From 1966 Goes Wide in SILENCE Coming from Scorsese

Since Andrew Garfield has eschewed the red pajamas of blockbuster franchise fronting for Spiderman, he has become a kind of dangling participle of the acting world, meant to modify the mythical noun of Actor but finding nothing in Hollywood to satisfy the life sentence that is the craft. Sounds pretty literary, huh?  Well, enter Martin Scorsese with renown author Shusaku Endo, a Japanese literary titan who died in 1996 at the age of 73, and was practically the only acclaimed novelist from Japan to write from the POV of a Roman CatholicMartySAndyGThe story goes that at age 11, Endo’s Roman Catholic aunt somehow convinced him to be baptized. And what follows is a Japanese glimpse into a conversion world of a Western religion that changes his life as a writer, but moves his story lines through the character perspective of Westerner’s eyes, specifically in the book SILENCE that centers around the travails of Portuguese missionaries circa the 17th century.

Talk about competing spiritual influences, Endo’s 1966 book (now adapted to screen) SILENCE tells the story of two of these Christian missionaries (Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver) who weather the ultimate test of their faith when they voyage to Japan in search of their missing mentor (Liam Neeson) – at a time when Christianity is outlawed in the 1600’s as mentioned and their presence forbidden.

Imagine it took Scorsese 28 years to develop, fund, and ultimately crank out this film, a spiritual journey into the mind of Shusaku Endo in itself.

Watch for Adam Driver to be very Adam Driver-y, as he imbues his performance with that peculiar talent he possesses, which one hopes won’t possess him someday. And of course Liam Neeson, off the TAKEN money-making treadmill, has a chance to buy back his soul here with what looks to be a phenomenally redemptive performance. Silence1sht

The hashtag is #SilenceMovie; SILENCE slips into theaters December 23, in time for that biggest of Western religious (but now commercial and cloying) holiday celebrations a/k/a Christmas.

Marty Scorses is quite the auteur, reaching into the weeds here for a rare blossom, storytellingwise. How it fits in with the rest of his work, you can figure out from this info graphic from our friends at Graphiq! Happy hunting for a theme, lol.

Endless Love for Tom Cruise 35 Years Later & Reacher Scores

SCREENMANCER TOM CRUISE ALERT: Say what you will, Tom Cruise knows how to “sell cars” as Steven Spielberg puts it when it comes time to promote a movie. Lee Child‘s screen adapt of the Jack Reacher novel series is just TC’s latest addition to the plus column, and it opens tomorrow – marking three and a half decades of film releases for the marquee star. James Corden is way out front on celebrating 35 years of Cruise control at the box office since 1981’s Endless Love, where the future Mission Impossible franchise-fronter debuted as supporting cast to a then superstar Brooke Shields in her first run at playing a lead role.

Enough said, and here’s Tom Cruise doing his own personal movie remakes with James Corden. Added bonus: Cruise through his career by the numbers, and the stats.

Movie Trailer Mash-Up, Or Brad Pitt’s Allied, Being Blunt & Get Out!

SCREENMANCER MOVIE TRAILER MASH-UP: Here’s a fun game, a visual one. Take your favorite movie trailers and together they tell their own story. In this case, we’ve heard Brad Pitt is a little down lately, so this one is just to cheer up an A-Lister. What do you get when you mash-up Pitt’s ALLIED, Emily Blunt’s THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN, and spooky future release GET OUT!?  Alliedlogo16We’re not exactly saying Paul Simon’s 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover, but it sure looks like that’s the message here. Okay, and now back to our regular trailer programming…

First, Brad Pitt Needs Some New Allies

France’s best export Marion Cotillard is so above the fray in life and the media. Plus she’s such an Oscar-magnet, this movie included. What’s it about? Nothing to do with the tabloids…

ALLIED is the story of intelligence officer Max Vatan (Pitt), who in 1942 North Africa encounters French Resistance fighter Marianne Beausejour (Cotillard) on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. Reunited in London, their relationship is threatened by the extreme pressures of the war. The buzz on this film is great, despite the Angelina Jolie-Brad Pitt domestic war chewing the media scenery around its release. Expect Marion to be nominated, or at least applauded for turning in a stellar performance opposite a Hollywood A-Lister.

Starring: Brad Pitt & Marion Cotillard

Let’s Be Blunt, D-i-v-o-r-c-e, Always a Great Movie Premise

In the thriller, Rachel (Blunt), who is devastated by her recent divorce, spends her daily commute fantasizing about the seemingly perfect couple who live in a house that her train passes every day, until one morning she sees something shocking happen there and becomes entangled in the mystery that unfolds. Is Emily Blunt always awesome, or what?

Based on Paula Hawkins’ bestselling novel, The Girl on the Train is adapted for the screen by Erin Cressida Wilson. Yes, Cressida Wilson, of the Chaucer-inspired name, wrote that freaky CHLOE (2009) movie with Amanda Seyfried who wrecks Julianne Moore and Liam Neeson’s onscreen marriage like a pro. The film’s executive producers are Jared LeBoff and Celia Costas, and it will be released by Universal Pictures.

Emily Blunt, Rebecca Ferguson, Haley Bennett, Justin Theroux (hey, wait a minute, isn’t he Jen Aniston’s husband? Bingo!), Luke Evans, Allison Janney, Edgar Ramirez, Lisa Kudrow and Laura Prepon star in DreamWorks Pictures’ The Girl on the Train, from director Tate Taylor (The Help, Get on Up) and producer Marc Platt (Bridge of Spies, Into the Woods).

Expect Justin Theroux to make a splash here, and make his wife Jennifer Aniston proud. It’s not easy going up against a talent like Emily Blunt, but it can be done.

When Someone Says “Get Out!,” You Better Split Quick

In Universal Pictures’ Get Out, a speculative thriller (don’t ask us what a speculative thriller is, but it’s kind of like imagining a worst-case scenario) from Blumhouse (producers of The Visit, Insidious series and The Gift) and the mind of Jordan Peele, when a young African-American man visits his white girlfriend’s family estate, he becomes ensnared in a more sinister real reason for the invitation. And can you believe Catherine Keener plays a super heavy in this one?

Now that Chris (Daniel Kaluuya, Sicario) and his girlfriend, Rose (Allison Williams, Girls), have reached the meet-the-parents milestone of dating, she invites him for a weekend getaway upstate with Missy (Catherine Keener) and Dean (Bradley Whitford, The Cabin in the Woods). At first, Chris reads the family’s overly accommodating behavior as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter’s interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he could have never imagined. Keener is hell-on-heels, mind control!

Equal parts gripping thriller and provocative commentary, Get Out is written and directed by Peele (Key and Peele) and produced by Blumhouse’s Jason Blum, as well as Sean McKittrick (Donnie Darko, The Box), Peele and Edward H. Hamm Jr. (The Box, Bad Words). The film also stars Caleb Landry Jones (X-Men series), Milton “Lil Rel” Howery (The Carmichael Show), Betty Gabriel (The Purge: Election Year), Marcus Henderson (Pete’s Dragon) and Keith Stanfield (Straight Outta Compton). www.getoutfilm.com

Disclaimer: So we’re not saying Brad Pitt should follow Screenmancer’s trailer mash-up advice here, but… while we’re reinventing how we see movies and movie marketing, he could reinvent himself in the uncoupling of the train-wreck that happens when you don’t know the light at the end of the tunnel is coming at you at the speed of an iron horse.

SCREENMANCER is a gathering place for people who make movies, get divorced, and are split between Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt.

Have You Played JACK REACHER: NEVER STOP PUNCHING Smartphone Edition?

SCREENMANCER MOVIE-TO- GAME ALERT: If you’re just getting ready for Fall, maybe back to school, what better time to burn up data than with Paramount Pictures release of JACK REACHER: NEVER GO BACK, with an all new digital game, available now for Android devices? You can find the Tom Cruise doppleganger game on Google Play and the film’s website.  TC1ShtJR2
Originally eleased in conjunction with National Punch Day a couple weeks ago, the “Jack Reacher: Never Stop Punching” digital game is an 8-bit side scroller where players pose as ex-major of the US Army Jack Reacher. And you know the rest, his mission is to protect the country from miscreants and morons (hopefully) in the name of justice. Reacher is a moderately unstoppable force who has nothing to lose and everything to punch. Team Punch Drunk, digerati-style that is.

If you want to download the game, hit up the official “JACK REACHER: NEVER GO BACK” movie site at this click, or another click at Google Play here.

Remember It’s Only a Movie – Wait, Now It’s Only a Game Too = Plot Summary

In case your brain stopped working, Jack Reacher in the form of A-List still-phenomTom Cruise, returns with his particular brand of justice in the (if you say so) highly anticipated sequel JACK REACHER: NEVER GO BACK. When Army Major Susan Turner (Cobie Smulders), who heads Reacher’s old investigative unit, is arrested for Treason, Reacher will stop at nothing to prove her innocence and to uncover the truth behind a major government conspiracy involving soldiers who are being killed.

At least, that’s what is supposed to happen storyline-wise. And it’s all based upon JACK REACHER: NEVER GO BACK, author Lee Child’s 18th novel in the best-selling Jack Reacher series, that has seen 100 million books sold worldwide. The film stars global box office draw Tom Cruise, Cobie Smulders, Aldis Hodge, Danika Yarosh, Patrick Heusinger, Holt McCallany and Robert Knepper.

But here’s a more serious question, how did they get Marshall Herskovitz on board as one of the screenwriters, when he is past PGA president and likely busy — oh wait — he was on Cruise’s Last Samurai too. Nevermind.

Here’s Your Damn Movie Clip, Be Patient, Folks, Lol

Surprise, Guess Who Produced It?

Produced by Tom Cruise, Don Granger and Christopher McQuarrie. Based on the book “Never Go Back” by Lee Child, with a screenplay by Richard Wenk and Edward Zwick & Marshall Herskovitz. Executive Produced by Paula Wagner, Herbert W. Gains, David Ellison, and Dana Goldberg. Directed by Edward Zwick.
