Oscar Whiplash Likely for Damien Chazelle’s LA LA Land & Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone

by Quendrith Johnson, Los Angeles Correspondent

Oh, to ruin Award Season… but isn’t that what we’re on earth for? To have our dreams shattered but then our lives uplifted, if only in the movies? Enter LA LA LAND, a singing, dancing act of pure wish fulfillment starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. Wait, a musical? Don’t be fooled. This is classic cinema updated with today’s angst. Stone says “the idea of this really modern story of two artists and dreamers” hooked her immediately. Ryan Gosling admits it was “a secret wish of mine” to make classic musicals.

DamienEmma16

LA LA LAND is the latest gift from Harvard-alum Damien Chazelle who brought us that inimitable gem, WHIPLASH. He’s the one who played drums in high school, which inspired the driven core character played by Miles Teller. In 2014, the then newcomer-director made the award show rounds for WHIPLASH. He even found himself seated on stage for AFI Fest with Tilda Swinton, Kristen Stewart, Bill Hader, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Marion Cotillard, plus other famous names. Chazelle seemed already tipped as someone who would make a mark in the movies. This may be the Rhode Island native’s Oscar year as a Best Director contender. This new movie also makes you forget he wrote 10 Cloverfield Lane, the horror thriller, but it’s just gliding on the Oscar that he is a viable screenwriter-for-hire in Hollywood too. (The connective tissue is Chazelle’s interest in demons, one’s own creative demons that drive great performances or in supernatural ones in his love of horror movies.)

AFI Fest 2014, and they already know Chazelle is a star talent.

AFI Fest 2014, and they already know Chazelle is a star talent. Far right, seated beside Marion Cotillard.

Fittingly Chazelle studied Visual and Environmental Studies at Harvard, and LA LA LAND is truly a visual and environmental tableaux as far as eye candy. And of course the casting is stellar. (Does everybody know Ryan Gosling was a Disney Channel kid star with Justin Timberlake? He was.) Chazelle says he considers Gosling and Stone to be like “Bogie and Bacall” and other great screen couples. Consider it Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Screenplay – if in nominations only, if not an outright sweep of the major categories. (Except for Viola Davis, who will take the category, and absolutely dominate, as Best Supporting Actress for FENCES, hopefully.)

LA LA LAND, yes that’s three words not a compound noun as in the pejorative for Los Angeles. Think Everyone Says I Love You by Woody Allen meets Your Favorite Behind the Scenes Classic 30’s Musical. Wait. Think Hamilton-like reboot of a slick, often goofy, cloying even when iconic, genre that just found its authentic swing. That’s what LA LA LAND becomes. Chazelle has a huge advantage because his background is so deep in the nuances and heartbreaking ability of music (i.e.; WHIPLASH) that he tugs the audience along by the ear as well as the eye in this pastel colored “real-life” twinged singing, dancing triumph.

LALA1sht16Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling are both “triple threats,” according to J.K. Simmons, who plays Ryan’s boss in this one and also starred with Teller in WHIPLASH (where Simmons picked up a Best Supporting Actor Oscar). Triple threat, for those of you under the age of 40, is Hollywood Golden Age lingo for the rare actors with the triple skills of singing, dancing, and acting. Remember the Dirty Dancing scene in Crazy, Stupid, Love? These two are giving new life to the idea of Silver Screen Super Couple Chemistry where Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper – who promised so much in Silver Linings Playbook – let us down hard lately, ouch in Serena, even in JOY.

Since Gosling and Stone killed it as a love pair in Crazy, Stupid, Love, they are matched like dancing shoes in LA LA LAND… now for the featurette courtesy of Lionsgate.

Here’s the insider story…

Find out more at http://www.lalaland.movie, but see WHIPLASH again in the meantime for the first jazz-musician themed Chazelle movie. LA LA LAND is his second excursion with a strong jazz focused storyline as Ryan Gosling plays a struggling jazz man who keeps running into Emma Stone’s struggling actor character. Coming off her career high in BIRDMAN (Michael Keaton), Emma Stone just keeps getting better and better. And this film makes you believe there is a place for dreaming, even in these cynical times.

LA LA LAND had a limited roll out on Dec. 9 and will no doubt go wider soon as it just received seven Golden Globe nominations, 8 Critics Choice Award nominations, after winning National Board of Review’s Top 10 Films of the Year, and Best Film from New York Film Critics Circle Awards.

I Pod for Real: In PASSENGERS, JenLaw & Chris Pratt Snap Awake During Space Sleep

Let’s face it, everybody loves those What-If scenario space movies. It’s almost a cliché that periodically orbits through the Hollywood universe of high concept screenplay ideas. The most famous un-produced pitch goes something like this: Hey, what if somebody found a black box on an alien space ship?  PASSENGERS, distributed by SONY for Dec. 21 release and directed by the Imitation Game director Morten Tyldum, aims exactly for this rarified airspace. As in Hey, what if two passengers on an interplanetary mission wake up 90 years too early from a pod snooze? You can hear the story development cogs begin to whirr.ChrisJenPass
In PASSENGERS, written by Princeton alum Jon Spaihts, who penned Prometheus, star casting helps. And there will be Michael Sheen, who has almost become a requirement for out-there futurist movies since his wacky turn in the remake of TRON. Besides Sheen, the Matrix’s Laurence Fishburne is also on board, in case we missed a clue about how momentous the scope of this picture is… but wait, there’s more.
A-list leads Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt star as the two passengers on this 120-year interplanetary hop when their hibernation pods wake them up at year 30, 90 years before their destination.  Oh snap, Jim (Pratt) and Aurora (Lawrence) are then “forced to unravel the mystery behind the malfunction as the ship teeters on the brink of collapse, with the lives of thousands of passengers in jeopardy.”

Again, PASSENGERS is directed by the Norwegian-born director of the Imitation Game Morten Tyldum, who seems to be an expert at mining the mental space in a movie scene. But nobody seems to overthink the human evolutionary politics of colonization in space because this picture’s plot destination is simply a love story. For conspiracy theorists who like escape earth fantasies, this should be just the ticket.

Opens wide Dec. 21 on the blue planet. #PassengersMovie, official site here.

Shusaku Endo’s Novel From 1966 Goes Wide in SILENCE Coming from Scorsese

Since Andrew Garfield has eschewed the red pajamas of blockbuster franchise fronting for Spiderman, he has become a kind of dangling participle of the acting world, meant to modify the mythical noun of Actor but finding nothing in Hollywood to satisfy the life sentence that is the craft. Sounds pretty literary, huh?  Well, enter Martin Scorsese with renown author Shusaku Endo, a Japanese literary titan who died in 1996 at the age of 73, and was practically the only acclaimed novelist from Japan to write from the POV of a Roman CatholicMartySAndyGThe story goes that at age 11, Endo’s Roman Catholic aunt somehow convinced him to be baptized. And what follows is a Japanese glimpse into a conversion world of a Western religion that changes his life as a writer, but moves his story lines through the character perspective of Westerner’s eyes, specifically in the book SILENCE that centers around the travails of Portuguese missionaries circa the 17th century.

Talk about competing spiritual influences, Endo’s 1966 book (now adapted to screen) SILENCE tells the story of two of these Christian missionaries (Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver) who weather the ultimate test of their faith when they voyage to Japan in search of their missing mentor (Liam Neeson) – at a time when Christianity is outlawed in the 1600’s as mentioned and their presence forbidden.

Imagine it took Scorsese 28 years to develop, fund, and ultimately crank out this film, a spiritual journey into the mind of Shusaku Endo in itself.

Watch for Adam Driver to be very Adam Driver-y, as he imbues his performance with that peculiar talent he possesses, which one hopes won’t possess him someday. And of course Liam Neeson, off the TAKEN money-making treadmill, has a chance to buy back his soul here with what looks to be a phenomenally redemptive performance. Silence1sht

The hashtag is #SilenceMovie; SILENCE slips into theaters December 23, in time for that biggest of Western religious (but now commercial and cloying) holiday celebrations a/k/a Christmas.

Marty Scorses is quite the auteur, reaching into the weeds here for a rare blossom, storytellingwise. How it fits in with the rest of his work, you can figure out from this info graphic from our friends at Graphiq! Happy hunting for a theme, lol.

Endless Love for Tom Cruise 35 Years Later & Reacher Scores

SCREENMANCER TOM CRUISE ALERT: Say what you will, Tom Cruise knows how to “sell cars” as Steven Spielberg puts it when it comes time to promote a movie. Lee Child‘s screen adapt of the Jack Reacher novel series is just TC’s latest addition to the plus column, and it opens tomorrow – marking three and a half decades of film releases for the marquee star. James Corden is way out front on celebrating 35 years of Cruise control at the box office since 1981’s Endless Love, where the future Mission Impossible franchise-fronter debuted as supporting cast to a then superstar Brooke Shields in her first run at playing a lead role.

Enough said, and here’s Tom Cruise doing his own personal movie remakes with James Corden. Added bonus: Cruise through his career by the numbers, and the stats.

Kate Beckinsale Sails from LOVE to the UNDERWORLD Again In BLOOD WARS

SCREENMANCER KATE BECKINSALE ALERT – During a press roundtable for Whit Stillman’s latest movie LOVE & FRIENDSHIP, where Kate Beckinsale just kills it in a Jane Austen-themed reboot as devious Lady Susan, she was asked about her Burmese heritage. KateCropElbowIf you didn’t know, Beckinsale is one-eighth Burmese. There are so many things people don’t know about UK native Beckinsale (besides her huge male gaming fan base!). Perhaps the most remarkable gift is her incredible inner steel and staying power in an industry that is very tough on women, especially in action roles. This accounts for the success of her run as Underworld’s franchise-fronter Selene. And in the newest installment, she gets to go fang-to-fang with HBO’s “Game of Thrones” heavy Charles Dance. (You know, the one Tyrion killed with a crossbow whilst on the privy.)

So, without further backstory on the Other Kate (not Winslet or Blanchett), here is the storyline. This installment of the blockbuster franchise, BldWrsKate16UNDERWORLD: BLOOD WARS follows Vampire death dealer, Selene (Kate Beckinsale) as she fends off brutal attacks from both the Lycan clan and the Vampire faction that betrayed her.  With her only allies, David (Theo James) and his father Thomas (Charles Dance), she must stop the eternal war between Lycans and Vampires, even if it means she has to make the ultimate sacrifice. Sounds exhausting, right? Expect Kate Beckinsale to continue her tireless march toward the finish line in this franchise. And the recognition she deserves as a very talented shape-shifter who can go from playing tough-talking screen legend Ava Gardner (AVIATOR) to TOTAL RECALL’s remake assassin and back to  Selene, this sleek fanged one.
The director (Anna Foerster) on this one is a woman, an added plus for a female action starrer. We’re early on Blood Wars, the release date isn’t until Jan. 6, 2017, but Beckinsale is so fun to watch, and listen to, with that great narration going on.

Symbologist Paradise, Or Tom Hanks & Felicity Jones in Koepp’s Pre-Halloween release INFERNO

SCREENMANCER SIGNS & SYMBOLS ALERT – Almost Halloween, Oct. 28 to be precise, is the perfect time for David Koepp’s screen version of Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code follow-up, INFERNO. Koepp, who is also a director, steps back into the screenwriter role for Brian Grazer and Ron Howard‘s IMAGINE production company. Today they had a photo call for Columbia Pictures in Italy, and everybody turned out looking pretty chill, which has nothing to do with the high-intensity plot and world-breaking storyline. What’s it about? Glad you asked.

Florence, Italy –October 7, 2016 - Tom Hanks at the Columbia Pictures, Inferno photo call at the Forte di Belvedere in Florence Italy.

Florence, Italy –October 7, 2016 – Tom Hanks at the Columbia Pictures, Inferno photo call at the Forte di Belvedere in Florence Italy.

So we’ve got Symbologist Tom Hanks with British Import Felicity Jones, nominated last year for THEORY OF EVERYTHING. After white-haired SULLY, Hanks is back in black, on the trail of a super villain who plans to mess up everyone’s DNA. Okay, that’s an oversimplification. Ben Foster and Omar Sy (Intouchables) also star. (Isn’t Ben Foster usually cast as a bad guy?) Let’s have the official version, please…

Academy Award® winner Ron Howard returns to direct the latest bestseller in Dan Brown’s (Da Vinci Code) billion-dollar Robert Langdon series, Inferno, which finds the famous symbologist (again played by Tom Hanks) on a trail of clues tied to the great Dante himself.  When Langdon wakes up in an Italian hospital with amnesia, he teams up with Sienna Brooks (Felicity Jones), a doctor he hopes will help him recover his memories.

Florence, Italy –October 7, 2016 - Director, Ron Howrd and Felicity Jones at the Columbia Pictures INFERNO photo call at the Forte di Belvedere in Florence Italy.

Together, they race across Europe and against the clock to stop a madman from unleashing a global virus that would wipe out half of the world’s population. The film’s screenplay is by David Koepp, based upon the novel by Dan Brown. Brian Grazer and Ron Howard are the producers.

Expect Tom Hanks to look 20 years younger with the darker mop, and he gets to run a lot, always good exercise on set. The movie has great lines like “there’s a switch, if you throw it, half of the people on earth will die… you are humanity’s final hope.” Watch the clip next…

Movie Trailer Mash-Up, Or Brad Pitt’s Allied, Being Blunt & Get Out!

SCREENMANCER MOVIE TRAILER MASH-UP: Here’s a fun game, a visual one. Take your favorite movie trailers and together they tell their own story. In this case, we’ve heard Brad Pitt is a little down lately, so this one is just to cheer up an A-Lister. What do you get when you mash-up Pitt’s ALLIED, Emily Blunt’s THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN, and spooky future release GET OUT!?  Alliedlogo16We’re not exactly saying Paul Simon’s 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover, but it sure looks like that’s the message here. Okay, and now back to our regular trailer programming…

First, Brad Pitt Needs Some New Allies

France’s best export Marion Cotillard is so above the fray in life and the media. Plus she’s such an Oscar-magnet, this movie included. What’s it about? Nothing to do with the tabloids…

ALLIED is the story of intelligence officer Max Vatan (Pitt), who in 1942 North Africa encounters French Resistance fighter Marianne Beausejour (Cotillard) on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. Reunited in London, their relationship is threatened by the extreme pressures of the war. The buzz on this film is great, despite the Angelina Jolie-Brad Pitt domestic war chewing the media scenery around its release. Expect Marion to be nominated, or at least applauded for turning in a stellar performance opposite a Hollywood A-Lister.

Let’s Be Blunt, D-i-v-o-r-c-e, Always a Great Movie Premise

In the thriller, Rachel (Blunt), who is devastated by her recent divorce, spends her daily commute fantasizing about the seemingly perfect couple who live in a house that her train passes every day, until one morning she sees something shocking happen there and becomes entangled in the mystery that unfolds. Is Emily Blunt always awesome, or what?

Based on Paula Hawkins’ bestselling novel, The Girl on the Train is adapted for the screen by Erin Cressida Wilson. Yes, Cressida Wilson, of the Chaucer-inspired name, wrote that freaky CHLOE (2009) movie with Amanda Seyfried who wrecks Julianne Moore and Liam Neeson’s onscreen marriage like a pro. The film’s executive producers are Jared LeBoff and Celia Costas, and it will be released by Universal Pictures.

Emily Blunt, Rebecca Ferguson, Haley Bennett, Justin Theroux (hey, wait a minute, isn’t he Jen Aniston’s husband? Bingo!), Luke Evans, Allison Janney, Edgar Ramirez, Lisa Kudrow and Laura Prepon star in DreamWorks Pictures’ The Girl on the Train, from director Tate Taylor (The Help, Get on Up) and producer Marc Platt (Bridge of Spies, Into the Woods).

Expect Justin Theroux to make a splash here, and make his wife Jennifer Aniston proud. It’s not easy going up against a talent like Emily Blunt, but it can be done.

When Someone Says “Get Out!,” You Better Split Quick

In Universal Pictures’ Get Out, a speculative thriller (don’t ask us what a speculative thriller is, but it’s kind of like imagining a worst-case scenario) from Blumhouse (producers of The Visit, Insidious series and The Gift) and the mind of Jordan Peele, when a young African-American man visits his white girlfriend’s family estate, he becomes ensnared in a more sinister real reason for the invitation. And can you believe Catherine Keener plays a super heavy in this one?

Now that Chris (Daniel Kaluuya, Sicario) and his girlfriend, Rose (Allison Williams, Girls), have reached the meet-the-parents milestone of dating, she invites him for a weekend getaway upstate with Missy (Catherine Keener) and Dean (Bradley Whitford, The Cabin in the Woods). At first, Chris reads the family’s overly accommodating behavior as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter’s interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he could have never imagined. Keener is hell-on-heels, mind control!

Equal parts gripping thriller and provocative commentary, Get Out is written and directed by Peele (Key and Peele) and produced by Blumhouse’s Jason Blum, as well as Sean McKittrick (Donnie Darko, The Box), Peele and Edward H. Hamm Jr. (The Box, Bad Words). The film also stars Caleb Landry Jones (X-Men series), Milton “Lil Rel” Howery (The Carmichael Show), Betty Gabriel (The Purge: Election Year), Marcus Henderson (Pete’s Dragon) and Keith Stanfield (Straight Outta Compton). www.getoutfilm.com

Disclaimer: So we’re not saying Brad Pitt should follow Screenmancer’s trailer mash-up advice here, but… while we’re reinventing how we see movies and movie marketing, he could reinvent himself in the uncoupling of the train-wreck that happens when you don’t know the light at the end of the tunnel is coming at you at the speed of an iron horse.

SCREENMANCER is a gathering place for people who make movies, get divorced, and are split between Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt.

Have You Played JACK REACHER: NEVER STOP PUNCHING Smartphone Edition?

SCREENMANCER MOVIE-TO- GAME ALERT: If you’re just getting ready for Fall, maybe back to school, what better time to burn up data than with Paramount Pictures release of JACK REACHER: NEVER GO BACK, with an all new digital game, available now for Android devices? You can find the Tom Cruise doppleganger game on Google Play and the film’s website.  TC1ShtJR2
Originally eleased in conjunction with National Punch Day a couple weeks ago, the “Jack Reacher: Never Stop Punching” digital game is an 8-bit side scroller where players pose as ex-major of the US Army Jack Reacher. And you know the rest, his mission is to protect the country from miscreants and morons (hopefully) in the name of justice. Reacher is a moderately unstoppable force who has nothing to lose and everything to punch. Team Punch Drunk, digerati-style that is.

If you want to download the game, hit up the official “JACK REACHER: NEVER GO BACK” movie site at this click, or another click at Google Play here.

Remember It’s Only a Movie – Wait, Now It’s Only a Game Too = Plot Summary

In case your brain stopped working, Jack Reacher in the form of A-List still-phenomTom Cruise, returns with his particular brand of justice in the (if you say so) highly anticipated sequel JACK REACHER: NEVER GO BACK. When Army Major Susan Turner (Cobie Smulders), who heads Reacher’s old investigative unit, is arrested for Treason, Reacher will stop at nothing to prove her innocence and to uncover the truth behind a major government conspiracy involving soldiers who are being killed.

At least, that’s what is supposed to happen storyline-wise. And it’s all based upon JACK REACHER: NEVER GO BACK, author Lee Child’s 18th novel in the best-selling Jack Reacher series, that has seen 100 million books sold worldwide. The film stars global box office draw Tom Cruise, Cobie Smulders, Aldis Hodge, Danika Yarosh, Patrick Heusinger, Holt McCallany and Robert Knepper.

But here’s a more serious question, how did they get Marshall Herskovitz on board as one of the screenwriters, when he is past PGA president and likely busy — oh wait — he was on Cruise’s Last Samurai too. Nevermind.

Here’s Your Damn Movie Clip, Be Patient, Folks, Lol

Surprise, Guess Who Produced It?

Produced by Tom Cruise, Don Granger and Christopher McQuarrie. Based on the book “Never Go Back” by Lee Child, with a screenplay by Richard Wenk and Edward Zwick & Marshall Herskovitz. Executive Produced by Paula Wagner, Herbert W. Gains, David Ellison, and Dana Goldberg. Directed by Edward Zwick.

Fifty Shades… Snarker? Relax, We Love Dakota Johnson

SCREENMANCER #FIFTYSHADESDARKER ALERT: Okay so, they had to make another one, right? From FIFTY SHADES OF GREY, the deviant duo (Dakota Johnson, Jamie Dornan) return with adult adolescent sex scenes… what? That’s not in the press kit. We apologize. Here’s what is in the press kit from FIFTY SHADES DARKER

Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson return as Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele in Fifty Shades Darker, the second chapter based on the worldwide bestselling “Fifty Shades” phenomenon.  Expanding upon events set in motion in 2015’s blockbuster film that grossed more than $560 M globally, the new installment arrives for Valentine’s Day (that’s Feb. 14, folks, a day universally hated by singles) and invites you to slip into something a shade darker.

When a wounded (just read it, and stop chuckling) Christian Grey tries to entice a cautious Ana Steele back into his life, she demands a new arrangement before she will give him another chance.  As the two begin to build trust and find stability, shadowy figures from Christian’s past start to circle the couple, determined to destroy their hopes for a future together. (Yeah, okay, we’ll buy that. As long as it’s not too naughty. And we can laugh amongst ourselves, quietly.)

Returning from Fifty Shades of Grey are Academy Award® winner Marcia Gay Harden, Jennifer Ehle, Luke Grimes, Rita Ora, Victor Rasuk, Eloise Mumford and Max Martini, who are joined for the first time by Oscar® winner Kim Basinger, Hugh Dancy, Bella Heathcote and Eric Johnson. Fifty Shades Darker is directed by James Foley (Fear, House of Cards) and once again produced by Michael De Luca, Dana Brunetti and Marcus Viscidi, alongside E L James, the creator of the culture-spanning blockbuster series.  The screenplay is by Niall Leonard, based on the book by James.  www.fiftyshadesmovie.com
